Frequently Asked Questions.
The Practical Q&As
What can I expect in the first session?
Your first session is a thorough intake evaluation, where we’ll explore many aspects of your life: your mental health history, family, culture, relationships, job, and physical health. By the end of the session, we’ll work together to create clear, specific goals for therapy. I see therapy as an intentional space, designed for growth and meaningful change, rather than a space for venting. My goal is to help you leave each session feeling understood, supported, and with actionable steps toward your emotional wellness goals.
How long are sessions, and how often do we meet?
Sessions are one hour long, and we meet weekly. It’s important to remember that consistency is key. Achieving meaningful change takes time and steady practice, and by committing to a weekly schedule, we can make real progress toward the goals we set together, while building the skills and insight that support lasting growth.
Do you offer in person, or telehealth sessions?
I offer sessions via secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth. You’ll be able to join from the comfort of your home, but you must be located in New York State during our sessions, as that is where I am licensed to practice.
Do you take insuance?
Yes, I accept various Aetna, Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield, Optum, Oscar, and United Health Care plans. You can use this Alma tool to check your insurance cost estimate.
What is your cancellation policy?
I ask for at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. For your first session, a late cancellation will serve as a friendly reminder of this policy. After that, sessions canceled with less than 24 hours notice are billed at the full session rate, except in cases of true emergency.
How long will I be in therapy?
The length of therapy varies depending on your goals and the work we do together. Some people come for a few months to address a specific challenge, while others stay longer to explore patterns, deepen self-understanding, and integrate lasting change. With regular weekly sessions, clients often begin to notice meaningful shifts within the first several months, but deep and sustainable growth is a gradual process that unfolds over time.
Is everything I share confidential?
Yes. Therapy is a private space, with very few exceptions required by law (such as concerns about safety). I’ll review these exceptions with you in the first session so you feel fully informed.
The Relatable Q&As
Will I cry?
Maybe! Tears have a way of showing up when you least expect them, often when we’re talking about something that really matters to you. And that’s totally okay. It’s all part of the emotional journey. And if you don’t cry? Also completely fine. Therapy works in lots of ways, and sometimes it’s just about feeling heard, lighter, or a little more understood.
What if I don’t know what to talk about?
Oh, I hear this a lot! It’s completely normal to feel unsure at first. That’s why we spend the intake session setting intentional goals, it’s like mapping out our path together. And even if you don’t know where to start, don’t worry. I’ll help guide us with gentle questions and reflections, so we can uncover what really matters to you.
Do I need to have a “big problem” to come to therapy?
Absolutely not. Therapy isn’t only for crises or hard times; it’s for anyone who wants to understand themselves better, explore patterns, or figure out ways to live more fully. Think of it like a space for reflection, growth, and even small breakthroughs that can ripple into the rest of your life.
What if I’m nervous?
Completely normal. Opening your heart and mind to a new person is nerve-racking, like showing someone a part of you that usually stays tucked away. But that’s exactly why I focus on creating a gentle, safe space. We can take things at your pace, and I’ll be right there with you the whole way.
Will therapy change me?
Yes! And in the best way! You’re not becoming someone else, therapy is about helping you step into a version of yourself that’s more grounded, confident, peaceful, resilient, and self-aware. It’s about feeling more like you, just with a little more clarity, ease, and freedom.
Do I have to talk about my childhood?
You might not want to, and most people certainly don’t at first! I know it can feel a bit cliché, but our childhood experiences sneakily shape who we are as adults. Don’t worry, it’ll come up naturally when it’s ready, no forced nostalgia is required.
